The Long and Short of the Definition of Global Warming

Global warming remains a topic some individuals will purport to claim understanding when, in reality, their knowledge of the subject is cursory at best. The definition of global warming has a tendency to be overly simplified. This is further confounded by the fact the structure of news and newsmagazines is designed so as to keep viewers from channel flipping. In order to keep the viewer from changing a channel, a specific subject is covered for a brief amount of time and then the subject matter changes to a different topic. Watch a cable news program today and you will notice five segments of five topics over the course of an hour. Then, watch a tape of a similar show from the 1960’s and you’ll see one single topic for the entire hour.

For the record, the cable TV definition of global warming that has become the de-facto comprehensive definition of global warming is the raising of the lower atmospheric temperature as a result of greenhouse gas emissions due to the uninterrupted flow of emission since the dawn of the industrial revolution. Now, this general definition of global warming in and of itself is useless without any understanding of the various components of the definition. That is, you need to know what green house gas, the industrial revolution, and the lower atmosphere actually are in order for the general definition of global warming to make sense.

By the way the news media portrays global warming, the general global warming definition isn’t even important. What is important is prescribing to one of the following two concepts: Global warming is real or global warming is fake and in order to prescribe to one of these ideas requires pulling the party ticket lever in a voting booth. The actual study of the scientific data both pro and con about global warming isn’t even considered and, in a sense, it is almost as if to say a global warming definition isn’t even necessary.
